The Kent Painters Group 24th Annual Exhibition is at Sevenoaks School this weekend. On 31 October, 6.30 – 9.00 pm come and meet the artists. on 1 and 2 November the exhibition is open 10 am – 4 pm. This year, Article 25’s 10×10 is centred on the River Thames and The Shard. I was assigned square C3, on the North Bank, directly opposite The Globe. In fact, I soon decided that the best thing about my square was the view of the opposite bank, including Tate Modern, The Globe, Southwark Cathedral, and the lively River frontage. By contrast the North Bank, which is part of the City, is altogether more serious.
I spent several hours exploring, gathering bits of tickets, leaflets and newspapers which I have used as collage and integrated into the painting.
Together with 99 other works by artists and architects the painting will go on display and be auction at The Shard. All funds go to Article 25 for its fantastic work. Last two years my paintings have each raised £3000 – here’s hoping someone likes this one just as much!
As part of the South East Open Studios I will be opening my studio and you are very welcome to call in see my current work.

In memory of James Middleton-Stewart, ADP Partner who very sadly passed away last year, I have done a painting (see attached) which tries to capture a fund-raising cycle trail that the practice has organised. A team of cyclists will be cycling from ADP studio-to-studio: beginning in James’ home town Sherborne, on to London, Oxford, Birmingham, Manchester and finishing seven days later in Newcastle. I am doing the London to Oxford leg on Bank Holiday Monday 26 May.
My painting will be auctioned, and all the fund-raising is towards the Marudyan Society. James was instrumental in establishing links with this organisation which provides education to needy children in Gurguan, India. Our aim is to raise £15,000 – enough to build a school for 150 children.

Roger’s Brick Lane painting was sold last night following an exciting auction by Sotherby’s. Grouped with Zaha Hadid and Richard Rogers’ works as the climax to the event, Roger’s painting achieved the top price of the evening for the second year running. The auction and exhibition were held at the Granary, Central St. Martins, Kings Cross.
After Holborn Circus in London’s West End last year, this year Article 25 asked me to paint Brick Lane: my contribution to their 10×10 “drawing the city” fund-raising event, this time in the East End.
What a great subject! Full of colour, smells and music, the place buzzes with life on a Sunday afternoon. The spicy rich complexity of the food is echoed by the strong red weathered brickwork.
As well as acrylic paint and black ink I have incorporated collage into the image: the cover and some pages from Monica Ali’s book “Brick Lane”; some menus and tickets from the area; some wooden cutlery from the market; a palette knife broken in making the picture and a blade – representing the sharp edginess of the place.
